Geothermal at Renovus

Geothermal (or ground-source heating) is, in many cases, a practical and energy-efficient alternative to conventional combustion-based heating systems. Ground-source heat pumps use electricity instead of combustible fuels to provide heat to a building, achieving their relative efficiency by exchanging heat from an outdoor ground loop into the building.

Although Renovus has installed ground-source heating systems for some clients several years ago, we have decided to focus our business solely on wind, PV, and solar thermal. The reason for this is twofold.

First, we recognize that there are several well-qualified geothermal contractors working in our region and believe that it is in our company's best interest to not compete for this business. This fits with our company's basically non-competitive philosophy - we're all in this together.

Second, since we now have more than enough business to sustain us from clients interested in PV, wind, and solar thermal systems, we feel no compelling need to offer geothermal as well. For those who are interested, we can recommend these regional firms based on our experiences with them to date:

  • Van Hee Heating - Rochester, NY - 585.266.1382
  • Geotherm International - Tully, NY - 315.696.6100

Finally, it is worth noting that we believe that solar thermal space heating systems utilizing evacuated tube or flat plate collectors can be a practical primary heating system - yes, even in our climate.

As such, forward-looking persons may wish to consider solar thermal as an alternative to geothermal, particularly where new construction or extensive renovation will result in a super-insulated building where passive solar coupled with active solar thermal heating can meet a building's heat load requirements.
